College Football: Record Versus the AP No. 1

  • Notre Dame has played the most games against AP No. 1’s (25 games).
  • Miami FL has nine victories over AP No. 1’s, the most by any school.
  • Only two FBS schools have winning records vs. AP No. 1’s.  Alabama (.625 W Pct) and Miami FL (.563 W Pct).

 

Since the Associated Press started ranking college football teams in 1936, there have been 820 games involving an AP No. 1 ranked team.  In this post I’ll examine the records that schools have against AP No. 1 ranked teams.

Notre Dame has played the most games against AP No. 1’s (25 games).  Followed by Oklahoma (22 games) and Michigan (21 games).

Miami FL has nine victories over AP No. 1’s, the most by any school.  Followed by Notre Dame (8 wins), Oklahoma (7 wins), Purdue (7 wins), and USC (7 wins).

Only two FBS schools have winning records vs. AP No. 1’s.  Alabama (.625 W Pct) and Miami FL (.563 W Pct).

Northwestern has the most losses (18) to AP No. 1’s.  Followed by Michigan (17 losses), Notre Dame (16 losses), and Wisconsin (16 losses).

Indiana has played 15 games against AP No. 1’s without getting a victory (0-15).  It’s the most losses against AP No. 1’s without any victories.  Followed by Navy (0-12), California (0-11), Duke (0-11), Missouri (0-11), and Oregon (0-11).

 

From 1981 to 1991 Miami FL was 8-0 vs. AP No. 1’s.  No other school has managed to win more than three straight games against AP No. 1’s.

No school has ever defeated the AP No. 1 twice in the same season.  Although in 1984 Oklahoma defeated AP No. 1 ranked Nebraska and tied AP No. 1 ranked Texas.

In 1981 the AP No. 1 was defeated six times.  The most losses by AP No. 1’s in any season.  Followed by 1984 (5 losses), 1990 (5 losses), and 2007 (5 losses).

 

Purdue has defeated an AP No. 1 ranked Notre Dame team on four occasions (1950, 1954, 1965, and 1967).  The most victories by one school over a specific school ranked No. 1 by the AP.  Followed by Arkansas over an AP No. 1 ranked Texas (3 occasions), Miami FL over an AP No. 1 ranked Florida State (3 occasions), and Oklahoma over an AP No. 1 ranked Nebraska (3 occasions).

In 1942 unranked Holy Cross defeated AP No. 1 Boston College 55-12.  It’s the greatest margin of victory (+43) over an AP No. 1 ranked team.  The loss cost Boston College a national title, but a win might have cost the players their lives.  For more check out this Wikipedia article.
