College Football: Most Lopsided Intrastate Matchups

  • The FBS school with the most wins over a specific intrastate opponent is Oklahoma.  They have 81 wins over Oklahoma State.
  • Penn State’s 21-point average margin of victory over Temple, is the highest margin of victory by a FBS school over an intrastate FBS opponent.
  • Nebraska hasn’t played an intrastate opponent since 1921.  It’s the longest any current FBS team has gone without playing an intrastate opponent.

In the opening weeks of college football there are usually a handful of lopsided intrastate matchups.  This week fans will be treated to Akron vs. Ohio State, Florida Atlantic vs. Florida, and Tulsa vs. Oklahoma; which are just a few of the many intrastate matchups that kickoff college football this season.

Listed below are the most lopsided intrastate series in which a FBS school is or has been involved in.  Every intrastate series involving a minimum of 25 games, and where the FBS school had a .750 winning percentage or better has been listed.

Syracuse has the best average margin of victory over a specific intrastate opponent.  They have defeated Hobart by 30.3 points on average.

Penn State’s 21-point average margin of victory over Temple, is the highest margin of victory by a FBS school over an intrastate FBS opponent.

Longest Streak Without Playing a Intrastate Opponent

Nebraska hasn’t played an intrastate opponent since 1921.  It’s the longest any current FBS team has gone without playing an intrastate opponent.  They defeated Nebraska Wesleyan 55-0.

Wyoming hasn’t played an intrastate opponent since 1938.  They defeated Fort Warren 20-7.  It’s important to keep in mind that the University of Wyoming is the only NCAA institution in the state of Wyoming.

Arkansas hasn’t played an intrastate opponent since 1944.  They defeated Arkansas-Monticello 41-0.

    *The Ohio State University hasn’t lost to an Ohio school since a 7-6 defeat to Oberlin in 1921.

    *The closest any instate rival has come since was a 7-7 tie achieved by Wooster in 1924.
