College Football: Title Winning Head Coaches vs. their Alma Maters

Posted by Andrew McKillop on September 2, 2011

Post Highlights

  • LaVell Edwards’s 21 victories over Utah State, are the most victories by a national championship head coach over their alma mater.
  • Vince Dooley’s 13 losses against Auburn, are the most losses by a national championship head coach against their alma mater.
  • Texas and national championship winning head coach Mack Brown is 0-9 vs. his alma maters.

This Saturday Alabama will face off against Kent State.  On the surface there isn’t anything notable about this matchup.  But one interesting storyline is that Alabama and national championship winning head coach Nick Saban, will be facing off against his alma mater.  Back in the early 1970’s Nick Saban was a defensive back for Kent State.

National championship winning head coaches are 109-77-5 (.584 W Pct) vs. their alma maters.  Check out the list below for more information on the topic.

National Championship Head Coaches vs. their Alma Maters

Note: Records vs. alma maters include games played before and after the head coach won a national championship.  The listed alma mater(s) of a head coach is the school where the head coach played at.
