Matchups Between the Two Previous Super Bowl Winners

  • The previous year’s Super Bowl winner is 15-6 (.714 W Pct), in matchups featuring the two previous Super Bowl winners.  Four of those losses occurred in Week 1 games.
  • In 1997, the Green Bay Packers in their last and only appearance in a matchup between the two previous Super Bowl winners, defeated the Dallas Cowboys 45-17.  Their 45 points are the most in such a matchup.

This Thursday night the defending Super Bowl champion Green Bay Packers, open their season against the 2009 Super Bowl champion New Orleans Saints.  It will be the 22nd time that the two previous Super Bowl winners will be matched up against each other.

The Green Bay Packers will have history on their side Thursday night.  The previous year’s Super Bowl winner is 15-6 (.714 W Pct), in matchups featuring the two previous Super Bowl winners.  The previous Super Bowl winner has also won the last six such matchups.  It’s a streak dating back to Week 1 of the 1993 season.

In 1997, the Green Bay Packers in their last and only appearance in a matchup between the two previous Super Bowl winners, defeated the Dallas Cowboys 45-17.  Their 45 points are the most in such a matchup.

As mentioned earlier, the previous year’s Super Bowl winner, has a record of 15-6 in matchups between the two previous Super Bowl winners.  However four of those losses occurred in Week 1 games.

In 1973, the Miami Dolphins defeated the Dallas Cowboys 14-7 on Thanksgiving Day.  It was the last and only Thursday game featuring the two previous Super Bowl winners.
