NFL: A Tally of 1-0 Matchups Since 1970

Posted by Andrew McKillop on September 17, 2011

Post Highlights

  • Since 1990, a 1-1 team that had that record because of a loss in a 1-0 matchup, has a 17.8% better chance of making it to the playoffs, than a 1-1 team that didn’t play in a 1-0 matchup.
  • New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick is 5-1, in 1-0 matchups.  San Diego Chargers head coach Norv Turner is 0-4, in 1-0 matchups.  The coaches will meet in a 1-0 showdown this Sunday.
  • Going back to 1999, the Detroit Lions have won their last three 1-0 matchups.  It’s the longest current active winning streak in such matchups. Tied with the Cleveland Browns, Indianapolis Colts, and the New York Giants.

There are four NFL games this Sunday in which both teams have 1-0 records.  I thought it would be interesting to do a quick rundown tallying the records of NFL teams in 1-0 matchups since 1970.
