Delving into PFR’s NFL Play Index: Week Three

Posted by Andrew McKillop on September 26, 2011

Post Highlights

  • Going back to 1940, there have been 70 instances in which a team lost a game, despite holding a 17-point or more margin against their opponent at halftime.  In that time period the Vikings are the first team to lose such a game twice in the same year, let alone in back to back games. [Link]
  • Eli Manning has now thrown for 4 TD passes in his last two games against the Eagles.  Before Manning’s streak, there were only two other Giants QB’s (since 1960) that had 4 TD performances against the Eagles (1984 Phil Simms, 1965 Earl Morrall).  [Link]
  • The Packers are now the 15th defending Super Bowl champion to start their season 3-0.  Defending Super Bowl champions have made the playoffs 93% of the time when they start their season 3-0; the 2002 New England Patriots are the only defending Super Bowl champion to start their season 3-0 and miss the playoffs.

This is the Week Three edition of Delving into PFR’s NFL Play Index.  Just like the previous weeks, I will share some of my favorite queries I run on Pro Football Reference’s NFL Play Index during this week’s games, and other facts I find out.

Early Sunday Games

New England Patriots 31 at Buffalo Bills 34

Tom Brady throws 4 TD Passes, but 4 INT’s as well…

Tom Brady is only the 16th QB since 1960, to throw four or more touchdowns, and also throw four or more interceptions in the same game.  It previously occurred in 2003, when Buccaneers QB Brad Johnson threw 4 TD’s and 4 INT’s against the Falcons.  Brady is only the second Patriots QB to ever throw 4 TD’s and 4 INT’s in the same game.  The other Patriots QB was Babe Parilli back in 1964 against the Raiders. [Link]

Patriots get off to a fast start (14-0 1st Qtr) but lose…

It’s only the third time in franchise history (out of 37 games) that the Patriots lost a game that they led by 14 or more points at the end of the 1st quarter.  First time since 1993.  [Link]

Two games account for 50% of the INT’s thrown by Tom Brady against the Bills…

In his career, Tom Brady has thrown a total of 16 interceptions in games against the Bills.  His performance yesterday (4 INT’s), and on opening day in 2003 (4 INT’s), accounts for 50% of all his interceptions thrown against the Bills.  [Link]

Jacksonville Jaguars 10 at Carolina Panthers 16

Maurice Jones-Drew’s teams usually win when he runs for 120+ yards, but not this time…

Going back to college, when Maurice Jones-Drew runs for 120+ yards, his team usually wins (12-4).  He now has a 8-3 record with the Jaguars when rushing for 120+ yards, and he had a 4-1 record with UCLA when he rushed for 120+ yards. [NFL Stats] / [College Stats/ESPN]

San Francisco 49ers 13 at Cincinnati Bengals 8

Score was tied at a lowly three at the end of the 3rd quarter…

It was only the 4th time that the Bengals were involved in a game where them and their opponent had failed to score more than three points by the 4th quarter.  The last time it happened was in 1978 against the Bills; a 5-0 loss.  The previous week that season, the Bengals were also involved in another game with the same criteria; a 10-3 loss to the Patriots. [Link]

It was only the 7th time that the 49ers were involved in a game where them and their opponent had failed to score more than three points by the 4th quarter. The last time it happened was in 1978 against the Buccaneers (6-3 final). [Link]

Side Note: It was only the second time (out of 14 games) that the 49ers failed to score 20 or more points against the Bengals.  The other time was in the first meeting between these two franchises back in 1974. [Link]

Miami Dolphins 16 at Cleveland Browns 17

Browns trail after three quarters, but recover to win…

The Browns trailed the Dolphins by three points at the end of the 3rd quarter, but ultimately won the game.  It was the first time since 2008 (out of 24 games) that the Browns won a game despite trailing at the end of 3rd quarter.  [Link]

Detroit Lions 26 at Minnesota Vikings 23 OT

Another second half collapse for the Vikings…

Going back to 1940, there have been 70 instances in which a team lost a game, despite holding a 17-point or more margin against their opponent at halftime.  In that time period the Vikings are the first team to lose such a game twice in the same year, let alone in back to back games. [Link]

The last team to lose two games in a row in which they held their opponent to a shutout at halftime, were the 1998 Philadelphia Eagles (also Week 2 & Week 3 of that season).  Next week the Vikings will try to avoid becoming the first team since the 1943 Chicago Cardinals, to lose three games in a row in which they held their opponent to a shutout at halftime. [Link]

Lions pulling off rare second half comebacks…

The Lions have won their last two games, in which they were shutout at halftime.  The last time they have accomplished such a feat was in 1977, when in their 8th and 10th games of the season they were shutout at halftime, but came away with a victory.  [Link]

Houston Texans 33 at New Orleans Saints 40

Slow start, but another nice recovery for the Saints…

The Saints have a 5-3 record in their last eight games, in which they have fallen behind by 10 points or more by the end of the 1st quarter. [Link]

New York Giants 29 at Philadelphia Eagles 16

Another 4 TD performance for Eli Manning against the Eagles…

Eli Manning has now thrown for 4 TD passes in his last two games against the Eagles.  Before Manning’s streak, there were only two other Giants QB’s (since 1960) that had 4 TD performances against the Eagles (1984 Phil Simms, 1965 Earl Morrall).  [Link]

Denver Broncos 14 at Tennessee Titans 17

Another close game for the Broncos…

The Broncos have opened their season with three straight games decided by 3 points or less.  It’s the first time in their team’s history that this has happened.   It’s the eighth time it has happened in the NFL since 2000.  It last occurred in 2009, when the Steelers opened their season with three straight games decided by 3 points or less.

Later Sunday Games

Green Bay Packers 27 at Chicago Bears 17

The Packers are 3-0 for the 16th time in franchise history…

The Packers are now 3-0 for the 16th time in their franchise’s history.  The Packers have turned their last nine 3-0 season starts into playoff appearances (2007, 2001, 1998, 1996, 1982, 1967, 1966, 1965, and 1962).

The Packers are now the 15th defending Super Bowl champion to start their season 3-0.  Defending Super Bowl champions have made the playoffs 93% of the time when they start their season 3-0; the 2002 New England Patriots are the only defending Super Bowl champion to start their season 3-0 and miss the playoffs.

Five out of the eight teams that won back to back Super Bowls, started their second Super Bowl season 3-0.

New York Jets 24 at Oakland Raiders 34

Another 200+ rushing yard game for the Raiders…

Since Week 7 of the 2010 season, the Raiders have rushed for 200+ yards in six games.  The Raiders are now tied with the Chiefs for the most 200+ yard games since Week 7 of the 2010 season. [Link]

The Raiders are now 82-7 all-time when they gain 200+ yards on the ground.  [Link]

Baltimore Ravens 37 at St. Louis Rams 7

Ravens dominated the game early…

The Ravens scored 21 points in the 1st quarter.  It’s only the second time in team history that they scored 21 points or more in a 1st quarter.  The other time (24 – 1st quarter points) was against the Patriots in the 2009 Wild Card round.  [Link]

It’s only the third time going back to 1940, that the Rams gave up 21 points or more in the 1st quarter.  The last time was in 1999, against their future Super Bowl opponent the Titans (21 – 1st quarter points). [Link]

Kansas City Chiefs 17 at San Diego Chargers 20

Chiefs can’t get pass the Chargers…

Recently the Chiefs have struggled mightily when trying to pass the ball against the Chargers.  In their last ten games vs. the Chargers, the Chiefs have averaged 154 passing yards a game.  The last time the Chiefs passed for over 300 yards against the Chargers was 2005. [Link]

Arizona Cardinals 10 at Seattle Seahawks 13

Another sub-par performance, but Tarvaris Jackson get’s the W…

In 24 career starts, Seahawks QB Tarvaris Jackson has yet to pass for 300 or more yards in a game (averages 164 passing yards per start); however he has a 11-13 record as a starter. [Link]

Atlanta Falcons 13 at Tampa Bay Buccaneers 16

Bucs snap five game losing streak to the Falcons…

The Buccaneers snapped a five game losing streak to the Falcons.  The streak included a lot of heart breaking losses for the Buccaneers.  With the  average margin of defeat being 5 points.  Fitting that the Buccaneers snap the streak in a game decided by a field goal.  [Link]

Sunday Night Game

Pittsburgh Steelers 23 at Indianapolis Colts 20

Colts struggle in the air without Peyton Manning…

The Colts haven’t passed for 200 or more yards in their last three games.  The last time the Colts failed to pass for 200 or more yards in three consecutive games, was in 1996.  [Link]

Monday Night Game

Washington Redskins at Dallas Cowboys

Going back to 1970, the Cowboys have given the Redskins their first loss of the season on ten occasions.  Since 1970, the Cowboys are the most common team to give the Redskins their first loss of the season.
