College Football: Most Consecutive Weeks Defeating an AP Ranked Opponent

Posted by Andrew McKillop on October 4, 2011

Post Highlights

  • Iowa holds the record for most consecutive weeks defeating an AP ranked opponent (6 weeks).
  • Three of the schools (out of seven) that defeated an AP opponent four or more consecutive weeks, went on to win the AP national title.
  • The 1973 Oklahoma Sooners, and the 1987 Miami Hurricanes beat three consecutive ranked opponents twice in the same season.

Clemson has now defeated an AP ranked opponent for three weeks in a row.  It’s an impressive streak, but unfortunately it will come to an end next week when they play unranked Boston College.  In the history of the AP poll (since 1936), only seven teams have defeated four or more ranked opponents in consecutive weeks.   Iowa holds the records with six consecutive victories over AP ranked opponents in 1960.
