A Complete Record of NFL Overtime

Post Highlights
- The Broncos and Steelers have played the most overtime games (40). Coincidentally those two teams played the first regular season overtime game in 1974, a 35-35 tie.
- The Bears and Broncos have won the most overtime games (23).
- The Buccaneers have never scored an overtime touchdown.
- The most common overtime matchup has been the Broncos-Raiders. The Raiders hold a 5-3 edge over the Broncos in overtime games.
In 1974 the NFL enacted overtime in the regular season. Before then there were three overtime games in the NFL postseason, and one in the AFL postseason. In total there have been 491 overtime games played. Listed below are the all-time overtime records of each team in the NFL (including playoff games).
Data was compiled by utilizing Pro-Football-Reference’s handy Team Game Finder Tool. I highly recommend this tool whenever you have to deal with NFL scores and stats. This tool has already saved me hours of data compiling and organizing.

The Broncos and Steelers have played the most overtime games (40). Coincidentally those two teams played the first regular season overtime game in 1974, a 35-35 tie.
The Bears and Broncos have won the most overtime games (23). But the Jaguars have the best overtime winning percentage (.636). Followed by the Redskins (.625) and the Bills (.613).
The Titans/Oilers have lost the most overtime games (21). But the Texans have the worst overtime winning percentage (.125). Followed by the Seahawks (.286) and the Panthers (.357).
Overtime Streaks
From 1991-2003 the Patriots played in at least one overtime game every season (13 consecutive seasons).
The Steelers have played in at least one overtime game every season since 2000 (11 consecutive seasons), the longest active streak in the NFL.
From 1987 to 1992 the Cardinals didn’t play in an overtime game (6 years). The longest overtime drought in the NFL since 1974. The Seahawks have the NFL’s longest current overtime drought. The last time the Seahawks played in an overtime game was in Week 2 of the 2008 season vs. the 49ers.
The 49ers have won eight consecutive overtimes game. Their last overtime loss occurred in 2003. The Patriots (2000-03) are the only other team to win eight consecutive overtimes games.
The Patriots also hold the record for most consecutive overtime losses. The Patriots lost their franchise’s first ten overtimes games (1977-87). The Packers have lost their last six overtime games. The streak started in the frigid 2007 NFC Championship vs. the Giants.
Last year the Texans won their first overtime game, breaking a seven game overtime losing streak which stretched back to the start of the franchise.

Scoring Overtime Touchdowns
The Chargers and Steelers have scored the most overtime touchdowns (9). Followed by the Bears and Vikings (7).
The Buccaneers and Texans have never scored an overtime touchdown. The Bengals, Lions, Panthers, Seahawks, and Titans have only scored one overtime touchdown in their team’s history.
A handful of teams haven’t scored an overtime touchdown for at least a decade.

Allowing Overtime Touchdowns
The Vikings have allowed the most overtime touchdowns (10). Followed by the Cardinals and Lions (7).
The Bills, Broncos, Ravens, and Saints have only allowed one overtime touchdown in their team’s history.
The only overtime touchdown the Bills ever allowed occurred in 2002, when the Jets Chad Morton returned the opening kickoff of overtime 96 yards for a Jets win.
A handful of teams haven’t allowed an overtime touchdown for at least a decade.

Home or Away Success in Overtime
The home team has a slight advantage in overtime with a 250-224-17 (.526 W Pct). Although last year was the first year since 2004 that the away team had the better record in overtime games (11-8).
The Panthers haven’t hosted an overtime game since 2001. In three home overtime games they have never won.
The Bengals last won a home overtime game in 2001.
The 49ers last lost a home overtime game in 2000. They lost to the Raiders 34-28. That game also marked the last time the Raiders won an away overtime game.
The last time the Bears or Eagles lost an away overtime game was in 2002.
Additional Facts
The most overtime games in one season occurred in 2002 and 2003, when there were 26 overtime games (counting playoffs). Last year’s 19 overtime games were tied for the third most ever.
In Week 6 of 1995 there were 5 overtimes games. Those are the most overtime games played in one week.
The 1983 Packers (2-3) and the 2003 Panthers (4-1) played in five overtime games. The most overtime games played by one team in one season. The Panthers four overtime wins in 2003 is the most by any NFL team in one season. Many teams have lost three overtime games in one season. The last team to do so were the 2010 Bills.
No team has ever played in three consecutive overtime games. The last team to play in back to back overtime games were the 2010 Jets.
The most common week for overtime games in the NFL has been Week 12 (37 overtime games). Followed by Week 2 (35 overtime games).
The most common overtime matchup has been the Broncos-Raiders. The Raiders hold a 5-3 edge over the Broncos in overtime games.
The Dolphins-Patriots have faced off against each other seven times in overtime. With the Dolphins holding the 4-3 edge in overtime games against the Patriots.
The Eagles-Giants have played seven overtime games against each other. The Giants have a 6-1 edge in overtime games against the Eagles. The last time the Giants lost an overtime game to the Eagles was in 1988.

How many regular season overtime games have ended with a score with 30 seconds or less remaining in the overtime period?

I don’t know the answer to that question. You would have to look into all the gamebooks or logs, since box scores won’t tell you the time. Not really a project I’m interested in.
